How to play
But For Who?

Learn the But For Who? app: private lobbies, random teams and real match events that give everyone something to cheer about.

Before kick-off

Get your group together, put the football on and choose someone to host. But For Who? runs alongside the match you’re watching; it doesn’t stream the football. Each player needs the app and an internet connection to join the same private lobby.

The iOS app is currently awaiting App Store review. Ask about early access ↗

01. Create your private lobby

The host creates a lobby and chooses the available match and game settings. Share the invite code with your mates so everyone joins the same game. Check the player list and give everyone a moment to get ready before starting.

A private lobby keeps your group together. You can use it for a watch party at home or when you’re meeting up to watch the football elsewhere.

02. Pick your forfeit style

Agree on the kind of game everyone wants to play. There are three styles:

  • Dares: light-hearted prompts for your group, such as delivering your best post-match interview.
  • Challenges: optional activities that add a little competition between friends.
  • Points: keep the focus on the standings if forfeits aren’t your group’s thing.

The app is for adults aged 18 and over. Keep every challenge safe, comfortable and optional. Agree that anyone can skip a prompt, and never put pressure on someone to participate.

03. Let the team draw surprise you

The app randomly assigns teams. You don’t need to support the same club, and you don’t have to be a football expert to join in. Part of the fun is finding yourself invested in a team you wouldn’t usually follow.

Check your assigned teams before the match begins. Your allocation connects you to what happens on the pitch and determines how the selected match events affect your game.

04. Watch the match and play along

As real football events come in, the app updates your game. A goal can mean it’s time to give or take a forfeit, depending on your team and lobby settings. Follow the prompts in the app and enjoy the match together.

Your host’s settings determine which events count. Pro adds premium lobby modes, additional match events and advanced setup options. The app shows subscription prices and renewal terms before you purchase.

After the final whistle

Check the leaderboard, compare how everyone finished and revisit your game history. The football provides the drama; your group provides the conversation.
